On the eve of the Women’s Day manifestations of 2021, the Mexican government erected metal barricades surrounding the National Palace—the seat of federal executive power—in the heart of Mexico City. This was meant to prevent damage by demonstrators and, therefore, “protect the heritage of all Mexicans and avoid confrontation...a wall of peace that guarantees liberty and protection from provocations,” in the words of the President's spokesman.
On Saturday, March 6, the feminist collective Antimonumenta CDMX decided to paint the barricades with the names of recent victims of femicide in Mexico. Over the next few hours, hundreds of women spontaneously gathered to honor the absent women, writing their names and leaving flowers: an offering to remember them, to not forget, and, by doing so, to honor them.
This series of photographs documents the barricades that were intervened in those days so that they may still be read.
An homage, a scream of rebellion in the face of indifference and obsoletion.
En vísperas de las manifestaciones por el Día Internacional de la Mujer del año 2021, el gobierno de México decidió amurallar con vallas metálicas el Palacio Nacional —sede del poder ejecutivo federal— en el corazón de la Ciudad de México, para evitar que las manifestantes pudieran dañarlo y así “cuidar el patrimonio de todos los mexicanos y evitar la
confrontación... un muro de paz que garantiza la libertad y protege de provocaciones”, en palabras del vocero de la Presidencia de la República.
El día sábado 6 de marzo, la colectiva feminista Antimonumenta CDMX decidió intervenir esas vallas con los nombres de víctimas recientes de feminicidio en México. Durante las siguientes horas cientos de mujeres acudieron de manera espontánea a honrar a las ausentes, escribiendo sus nombres y dejando flores: una ofrenda para recordarlas, para no olvidarlas y, de esta manera, honrarlas.
Esta serie de fotografías documentan las vallas que fueron intervenidas durante esos días para que sigan siendo leídas.
Un homenaje, un grito de rebeldía ante la indiferencia y el olvido.
