The poems and photographs presented in this issue were created by a small group of Wixaritari youth from villages nestled among the hills and ravines of the Sierra Norte of Jalisco, around San Andrés Cohamiata. These young people participate in an intensive program of workshops dedicated to imagining and envisioning possible futures for the Wixárika Nation, and developing tools to address them. Through courses in forest management, reflections on their territory and the diverse ways in which modernity is transforming life in the sierra, this work explores what it means to be a young Wixárika in the 21st century. For the participants, this was their first experience with poetry and artistic photography. The results offer us a window into the minds and hearts of these Wixaritari men and women.
An invitation to connect with extraordinary honesty and sensitivity.
Los poemas y fotografías presentados en esta edición fueron creados por un pequeño grupo de jóvenes wixaritari, provenientes de pueblos asentados entre los cerros y barrancas de la Sierra Norte de Jalisco, alrededor de San Andrés Cohamiata. Estos jóvenes participan en un programa intensivo de talleres dedicado a imaginar y vislumbrar futuros posibles para la nación Wixárika, y a desarrollar herramientas para enfrentarlos. A través de cursos de manejo forestal, reflexiones sobre su territorio y las diversas formas en que la modernidad está transformando la vida en la sierra, este trabajo explora lo que significa ser un joven wixárika en el siglo xxi. Para los participantes, esta fue su primera experiencia con la poesía y la fotografía artística. Los resultados nos ofrecen una ventana a las mentes y corazones de estos hombres y mujeres wixaritari. Una invitación a conectar con una honestidad y sensibilidad extraordinaria.
