According to Ad Reinhardt’s (1913-1967) own tongue-in-cheek chronology published in 1966 for his show at the Jewish Museum in New York the same year, his 1930s formative years in the same city were spent studying art, editing student magazines, producing illustrations and getting involved in political activities. The chronology at this point does not mention the entry of the United States into World War II nor the outlawing of the Communist Party of the USA as an enemy organisation. The fact that he was then suspected of having been a member of the Communist Party or at least a Travelling Fellow and supporter is not mentioned either. The fact a file was open by the FBI on Ad Reinhardt is not in question, the reasons that might have been the case remains opens. To think that these 1930s cartoons would have been reason enough to make one cautious about a simple version of one’s own chronology, even in 1966, gives quite a chilling version of the actual political reality of the USA in the post war era.
